Nokia Series 40 sixth edition

The two best members of the supernovas announced by Nokia, 7610 Supernova and 7510 Supernova already come with the latest, sixth edition of the Series 40 platform. The Series 40 platform is a closed operating system that does not support running native applications nor does it support running more than one user application. Nokia Series 40 6th Edition comes with Java MIDP 2.1 support (taking into account developers' needs), providing more compatibility thanks to JSR 248 support. Another enhancement is the support for the JSR 179 interface, that provides external, Bluetooth-based GPS recevier support. The previously announced Series 40-based Nokia Maps application is thus green to go.

Another important new feature is the Flash Lite 3 player which doesn't enrich only browsing, but now Flash files can be used as animated wallpapers and screensavers. Another huge leap forward is the integration of the WebKit-based browser you can know from the Series 60 platform, that due to open-source WebCore and JavaScript Core support it brings HTML 4.01, CSS2, JavaScript 1.5 and Ajax compatibility for regular mobile phones. The new software still supports 240 x 320 pixels large displays at most, which is perfectly enough for general multimedia tasks. The new interface supports special transitions in the menu and WIndows Media Video (WMV) 9 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) 10 formats. The completion of WLAN support and the support for up to 600 kbyte large MMS messages is also included in the update.
