eHarmony Review

Welcome to one of the most in-depth dating services on the internet: eHarmony. According to a study, eHarmony is responsible for 438 marriages every day in the United States, making it one of the most popular destinations for marriage-minded singles on the internet. The site also calls itself “the first relationship service to use relationship science” to develop its compatibility matching and marriage profiles.

What makes eHarmony so unique? In the late 90s, after 35 years of counseling married couples as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Neil Clark Warren believed that there was a better way to find love than leaving it up to chance. His revelation led to the founding of eHarmony and the creation of the platform’s famous matching system. The system is based on a complex compatibility analysis developed through extensive research with married individuals. It’s so innovative, in fact, that the system was even granted a US patent.

After joining eHarmony, every member must complete a comprehensive Compatibility Quiz. The results are compiled into a detailed Personality Profile which is used to provide personal insight and enable the site to find compatible matches. The questions create a clear picture of who you are and what you’re looking for, going above and beyond what most dating sites do. Every match is screened for compatibility and assigned a matching score. This helps cut out the hours wasted searching through dead-end profiles on other dating platforms by showing only the matches that demonstrate compatibility with your profile. If you’re looking for a serious relationship, it doesn’t get better.

After setting up your profile, you can upload a photo and answer more questions to build your profile. A picture is not required, but it is encouraged to increase the response rate of your profile. To ensure everyone on eHarmony is serious about finding love, photos are blurred for Basic members. Only users who have demonstrated that they are serious about online dating by signing up for a Premium membership can see all photos of their matches.

Once your profile is active, the matching process is safely in the hands of eHarmony’s patented Compatibility Matching System, which provides daily matches based on the potential for deep connection and long-term compatibility. Every match is assigned a score that indicates the likelihood that you will be compatible. For more information, you can view their Personality Profile and see how your results compare.

eHarmony allows anyone to sign up for a free account, but features are limited for unpaid users. All members can set up a Personality Profile, receive new matches daily, view their matches’ profiles, send and receive Smiles and Icebreakers, and respond to a first message. Paid subscribers can send and receive unlimited messages, view unlimited photos, use enhanced search and sorting features, access their complete Visitors list, and more.

Here is a short video that gives a quick tour on the new eharmony experience:

Late in 2018, eHarmony was acquired by German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1, which also owns Parship Elite Group. In November 2019, eHarmony underwent a major update that introduced a number of new features, including support for same-sex partners. With this update also came the closure of Compatible Partners, eHarmony’s separate same-sex match service. Member accounts from Compatible Partners were moved to eHarmony as the platforms merged.

If you’re looking for convenience, eHarmony offers dating apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. The apps include all the important functionality of the main site, allowing users to register, take the Compatibility Quiz, see new matches, update their profile, upload photos, send Icebreakers or Smiles, send and respond to messages, and more. The design is user friendly and offers nearly the exact same experience as using the website.

In addition to the singles matching service, eHarmony operates eHarmony Labs, a relationship research facility, and publishes eHarmony Advice, a growing relationship advice site. The advice site is continuously updated with helpful blog posts and success stories, while eHarmony Labs conducts research for product development, peer review and academic publication.

eHarmony has also been a tremendous success here on Dating Sites Reviews, where it has won numerous awards over the years. Its impressive collection of honors includes the Single's Choice award, the Top Pick award for Match System and an award for innovation.

eHarmony Profiles & Sign Up Process

You can access the eHarmony dating service from their website and apps available for iOS and Android. Before you can start receiving matches, the first thing you will need to do is create an eHarmony account. For this you will need to enter your gender and the gender(s) you are seeking (men, women nonbinary, or any combination of these), your location (country), your email and a password. Alternatively, you can sign up using an existing Facebook account. Once the initial sign-up process complete, you will be asked to complete the Compatibility Quiz.

The Compatibility Quiz consists of 80 questions with hundreds of possible answers. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and includes a mix of open-ended questions and multiple-choice questions. Your answers help the Compatibility Matching System connect you with singles who meet your dating preferences. Try to respond spontaneously and honestly — there are no right or wrong answers. If you need to, you can pause the quiz (on any part) and finish it at a later time. Here are the chapters in the Compatibility Quiz and some examples of the questions they ask:

  1. Introduction
    • The first section of the Compatibility Quiz asks you questions about the kind of relationship and lifestyle you want. Examples include:
      • What is most likely to make you interested in someone?
      • In addition to love and affection, what are your main reasons for wanting a relationship?
      • Which statement best represents your ideal wedding?
  2. Preferences and Interests
    • The second section asks you to respond to questions about your personality, your lifestyle, your hobbies and interests and your preferences. Examples include:
      • What do you want your partner to like about you?
      • Which of the following do your friends and family think about you?
      • Are you a morning person or a night person?
  3. Intuition
    • In the third section, you must spontaneously select the image that most appeals to you from groups of two or three. The images are abstract drawings.
  4. Everyday Habits and Outlook
    • This section explores how your live your life and how you respond to specific scenarios in order to match you with people who will complement you. Examples of questions include:
      • Are you easily excited about things?
      • Does it bother you when people use their cell phone around you?
      • What is your immediate reaction if a person you're very close to does something that upsets you?
  5. Values
    • The final section asks questions about how you see yourself, how you see other people and how you see relationships. Examples include:
      • Do you like your physical appearance?
      • Do you believe that people are inherently good?
      • What do you think about marriage as an institution?

After you complete the Compatibility Quiz, you can view the analysis under Personality Profile. The Personality Profile is the basis for your matches and gives you insight into your own preferences, behavior and lifestyle. Premium members can see a more detailed analysis of their personality than free members.

To finish setting up your account, eHarmony will ask for the following information:

  • Profile Setup
    • Name, Birthday, Height, Ethnicity, Location
    • Maritial status, Children, Religion
    • Smoking
    • Education level, Occupation, Annual Income (other members do not see this)
    • Answer at least one question for your profile. Examples include:
      • I have a passion for…
      • I spend my free time…
      • The first thing people notice about me…
      • My ideal first date…
    • Write a short introduction about yourself and/or what you’re looking for in a relationship

The final step is to add profile photos:

  • Profile Photos
    • You may upload up to 12 images from your laptop and phone or import from Facebook
    • Your profile photo will appear blurred to other members until you decide to reveal it to the chosen few

While your eHarmony account is active after these steps, there are more sections you can fill out if you visit your own profile. We strongly recommend filling out everything that is important to you since your responses will help differentiate you from other matches and make your profile stand out. From the main profile screen, you can add or update the following information:

  • Complete Profile
    • Factfile
      • Body type
      • University
      • Languages
      • Pets
      • Desire to have children
      • Political view
    • Who Am I?
      • I’m thankful for…
      • My friends describe me as…
      • Things I can’t live without…
    • Answer more profile questions
    • Add more photos
    • Update background image

To adjust your settings, navigate to the Data & Settings tab from your profile page. From there, you can:

  • Account Settings
    • Update your password
    • Upgrade your membership
    • Toggle your profile visibility
    • Activate or deactivate your visitor list
    • Activate or deactivate your ‘Online Right Now’ display
    • Delete your profile permanently
  • Personal Data
    • Update your password
    • Update your name, location, workplace, email address, telephone number or income level
  • Notification Options
    • Change your notifications email address
    • Turn notifications on or off for specific actions, such as new messages, new profile visitors and new matches

Verification & Safety

Safety is an important consideration when using any online dating service. eHarmony helps keep its users safe with an SMS verification system. To verify your profile, visit the SMS Verification page under Data & Settings. Enter your mobile number to receive a text message containing a security code. Enter the code and the SMS Verified symbol will appear on your profile so other users know you are who you say you are.

If you encounter any issues while using eHarmony, you can report a user directly from their profile page or from within your communication. To do so, click on the menu button located in the upper right of the screen and select "Suspicious Profile?". This link will provide you several reasons for which you can report your match, and a free form option to provide additional information regarding your concerns. Your report will be sent to the Trust & Safety team for review.

Another option for dealing with an unpleasant encounter is to delete the user as a match. To do so, click the same menu button and select "Remove Partner." This option permanently removes the profile from your matches. Even if you change your search criteria in the future, you will never see the user in your matches again and your profile will never appear in their list of matches. The deletion process is anonymous, so the other member will be unaware of it, and cannot be undone.

eHarmony Matching

You will be able to review all your matches on day one and see the potential compatibility of each one by checking their matching score. eHarmony's 32 Dimensions of Compatibility are the result of continued research (of almost two decades) that reveals what is at the heart of a successful relationship. Their matching system and algorithm go beyond simple likes and dislikes of a person's attributes — instead, they focus on deeper foundational traits like ambition, sociability, level of passion and conflict resolution. This, of course, does not necessarily mean that all matches you receive from eHarmony will be someone who sparks your interest, but it does mean it is an excellent place to start. The matching score helps you to identify which members might be a good fit for you. A score over 100 is considered to be very compatible.

  • Compatibility Matching System
    • Users who fully complete the Compatibility Quiz are able to receive matches based on the 32 Dimensions of Compatibility. These matches show a compatibility score that can be clicked on to see a full compatibility analysis
    • The Compatibility Quiz can only be retaken after a new subscription purchase or a renewal of a Premium membership. eHarmony advises against retaking the quiz because prior knowledge of the answers could distort your results

Members cannot conduct their own searches on eHarmony; all matches are provided by the algorithm. However, you can adjust the matches you receive by updating your match preferences. Premium users have access to more match preferences as well as advanced options for sorting their matches.
